The Minnesota State Demographic Center hosted the 2013 Minnesota Data Opener – a public contest for data nerds, artists, policy wonks and concerned citizens to submit a visual entry to help Minnesotans understand a problem or challenge for rural Minnesota.

Three winners were announced on December 4, 2013, during a live-chat with support from Michael Olson of Minnesota Public Radio:

An archived version of the chat and all submissions can be found on www.mndataopener.com. The winning submissions will be displayed in the north corridor of the Minnesota State Capitol building during the 2014 legislative session.

A great panel of judges provided their expertise in deciding the winners:

  • Becky Adams – Recruitment Coordinator, Blandin Foundation
  • Susan Brower – State Demographer, State of Minnesota
  • James Kauth – Information Systems Application Manager, State of Minnesota
  • Jennifer Vogel – Reporter, Minnesota Public Radio
  • Ben Winchester – Research Fellow, University of Minnesota Extension
Thanks to everyone who contributed to a successful 2013 MN Data Opener!
