Minnesota Population Projections for Counties, 2015-2040

The Minnesota State Demographic Center regularly creates population projections.  In 2012 we used data from the 2010 Census and historical patterns to forecast what Minnesota's county-level population may be by 2040, including totals by age groups and sex. These projections can help communities plan for housing, services and other needs related to population aging and other anticipated trends.

Summary report

Data files

The above files have projected population figures from 2015 to 2040 for all 87 Minnesota counties. The county total population projections were created using a series of regression lines and then were controlled to the total state population published by the Minnesota State Demographic Center in February, 2012. The age and sex population projections are based on the cohort-component method for estimating and projecting a population. These figures are summed for each county and controlled to the total county population created in step one.

Population Pyramids

Population pyramids, also called age picture diagrams, are graphic illustrations that show the distribution of 5-year age groups by gender for the population of each county in Minnesota. Populaton pyramids are posted here as Microsoft Excel workbooks and contain separate data tables and graphs for each 5 year period.
