Demonstrators Demand More Money for Arthritis ResearchNational News A crowd estimated at 100,000, many in wheelchairs, demonstrated Sunday at the Capitol in Washington, D.C., in support of greater funding for arthritis research. After the demonstration, Health Secretary Aleisha Washington met with delegates from the Gray Rights Movement but did not give them much encouragement. Fiscal constraints caused by slow economic growth and resistance to tax increases have greatly reduced allocations for medical research grants in recent years, Washington told the delegates. "Unfortunately, in our current political climate, funding for health research is limited," she said to reporters after the meeting. "We have to devote our limited resources to diseases that are more immediately life-threatening." "We will continue our struggle," said GRM spokesperson Kim Roberts after meeting with Washington. "The response we got from the secretary was not satisfactory." ( Trends: aging, slower growth) |
